Doctor Grundy is the director of the Center for Human Nutrition and Chairman of the Department of Clinical Nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and chief of the metabolic unit, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, in Dallas, Texas. He has also earned the title of Distinguished Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

Dr. Grundy's major research area is the nutrition and metabolism of lipids, cholesterol and lipoproteins. He has published over 300 original papers, and numerous solicited articles and chapters.

Dr. Grundy has received numerous honors and awards. Among these are elections to the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the American Association of Physicians, and the National Academies Institute of Medicine. The American Heart Association has recognized him through its Award of Merit, the prestigious George Lyman Duff Lecture and the Robert I. Levy Lecture. In the nutrition field he has received the Roger J. Williams Award in preventive nutrition , the Bristol Myers Squibb Award for Distinguished Achievement in Nutrition Research and the American Society for Clinical Nutrition's E.V. McCollum Award. He was awarded an honorary degree in medicine from the University of Helsinki, Finland.

Dr. Grundy has chaired a number of American Heart Association committees, including the Arteriosclerosis Council, the Nutrition Committee, the Task Force on Risk Reduction, Committee on Scientific Councils, the Diabetes Committee, and the Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism Council. He also is the American Heart Association representative to the National Cholesterol Education Program and chaired this program’s Adult Treatment Panels II and III. He has been a member of the Food and Nutrition Board and Parent Committee on Dietary Reference Intakes of the Institute of Medicine and the US Governments Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
