Created in 2003, the Metabolic Syndrome Institute is an independent and not for profit association. Its members are international experts in lipid metabolism, diabetes, heart disease, endocrinology obesity, genetics, epidemiology, basic research and health economics. Being the first association totally devoted to the dissemination of knowledge about the metabolic syndrome, the Metabolic Syndrome Institute will provide an international multidisciplinary approach to a worldwide public health problem.

The Metabolic Syndrome Institute has been given the following mission:

Collect, analyse and coordinate the most recent data on the Metabolic Syndrome, in order to increase knowledge on its diagnosis, its prevention and its treatment.

Described and defined in 1988 by G.M. Reaven, US, the metabolic syndrome, is the subject of an increasing number of international publications.

The Metabolic Syndrome Institute will act as a bank for new knowledge on the metabolic syndrome and then transform available and validated information into useful and pragmatic tools for the scientific and medical communities and the general public, in order to better prevent, detect and treat the metabolic syndrome.

Contribute towards better care for patients: prevention, screening and treatment.

In countries where mortality caused by cardiovascular diseases is high, the traditional approaches to manage cardiovascular risk appear to have reached their limits.

Through permanent exchanges between experts from all horizons, the Metabolic Syndrome Institute has the capacity to better define the epidemiologic impact of this syndrome, to better understand the interaction between the different risk factors and to propose a coordinated worldwide policy for the screening, prevention and the treatment of this disease.

Promote knowledge, in particular with health professionals, scientific societies, the general public, by means of publications, lectures, training sessions and a web site.

The metabolic syndrome constitutes a major public health issue of concern to those involved in the health community, public and private health management organizations and the public at large. The Metabolic Syndrome Institute aims to increase awareness of the importance of the condition among the international community through publications, conferences, the development of educational programme for doctors and patients and communication actions aimed at media.

Undertake, develop and coordinate studies and research on the metabolic syndrome

More work is still necessary to better define and understand the physiopathological mechanisms involved in the metabolic syndrome.

The Institute aims to encourage fundamental, clinical and epidemiological research on the metabolic syndrome.

The work and analyses distributed to health professionals, health authorities, scientific organizations and the public by members of the Metabolic Syndrome Institute will be subjected to quality control based on  the following principles:
