Banting lecture 1988. Role of insulin resistance in human disease.

The concept of a syndrome of abnormalities linked to insulin resistance was first introduced by Reaven in 1988 when he proposed that an impaired in vivo insulin action was a central component of a cluster of metabolic disturbances characterized by elevated triglyceride and low HDL-cholesterol concentrations, fasting hyperinsulinemia and elevated blood pressure. He also noted that these abnormalities were observed in the absence of classical risk factors such as raised LDL cholesterol concentrations.
