Periodic screening for dyslipidemia recommended in Ethiopian diabetic patients - (27/06/06)
Diabetic subjects from sub-Saharan Africa are often considered as having less severe dyslipidemia than their North-Caucasian counterparts. Few data were hitherto available regarding subjects originating from Ethiopia, a country with a complex ethno-geographic heritage that includes both Bantu and non-Bantu peoples. In a cross-sectional study of 193 Ethiopian subjects, among whom 54 were type 1 diabetics, 92 type 2 diabetics and 47 non-diabetic controls, mean total cholesterol, triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein levels were significantly higher and high-density lipoprotein levels significantly lower in patients with diabetes as compared with controls. Based on these results, the authors recommend that periodic screening for dyslipidemia be conducted in all Ethiopian diabetic patients.
