Metabolic syndrome associated with increased mortality risk in Asian population
The metabolic syndrome is associated with increased mortality risk in Caucasian populations. It is not established whether this also applies to Asian subjects. In a population-based cohort of 2863 Chinese subjects, the impact of the US NCEP ATP III metabolic syndrome phenotype on mortality was examined by Cox regression analysis using Asian central obesity criteria. After a mean follow-up period of 8.45 years, 89 deaths had occurred. After adjusting for age, socioeconomic status and a range of lifestyle habits, subjects with metabolic syndrome had increased risk of both all-cause mortality (P for trend =0.037) and vascular disease (P for trend =0.002) compared to those without metabolic syndrome. Comparing subjects with 0-2 components to those with metabolic syndrome yielded hazard ratios of 1.49 and 3.36, respectively.
