LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this activity,
the clinician will be better able to:

  1. List the criteria used for diagnosing metabolic syndrome
  2. List the most current guidelines and describe the available diagnostic tools used to assess metabolic syndrome risk factors
  3. Develop a systematic risk factor reduction plan for patients with diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and other metabolic syndrome criteria
  4. Apply various therapies to treat metabolic syndrome and reduce risk factors in the context of primary and secondary prevention

FEATURED LANDMARK STUDY OF 2008

Landmark Study with Lifestyle and Obesity Management

GOSPEL

(Global secondary prevention strategies to limit event recurrence after myocardial infarction; results of the GOSPEL study, a multicenter, randomized controlled trial from the Italian Cardiac Rehabilitation Network)

Outcome: Cardiovascular mortality, non-fatal re-MI, angina requiring hospitalization, urgent revascularization procedures, hospitalization for heart failure, non-fatal stroke.

Number of participants: 3241 patients with recent (<3 months) myocardial infarction who completed an initial cardiac rehabilitation programme.

Comparison: Long-lasting (over 3 years) multifactorial continued educational and behavioural programme (extensive cardiac rehabilitation sessions, monthly from months 1 to 6, then every 6 months for 3 years with aerobic exercise, comprehensive lifestyle and risk factor counseling, and clinical assessment) vs usual care.

Design: Randomized, open label, active control, parallel assignment.

Mission of the Metabolic
Syndrome Institute

Created in 2003, the Metabolic Syndrome Institute is an independent and not for profit association. Its members are international experts in lipid metabolism, diabetes, heart disease, endocrinology obesity, genetics, epidemiology, basic research and health economics. Being the first association totally devoted to the dissemination of knowledge about the metabolic syndrome, the Metabolic Syndrome Institute provides an international multidisciplinary approach to a worldwide public health problem.
